How to Monogram Terrycloth Towels

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

• Towel(s)
• Embroidery thread
• Embroidery needle (if stitching by hand)
• Stabilizers
• Embroidery hoop
• Scissors
• Sewing machine (if stitching by machine)

Step1
Design the monogram to be sewn. Keep your design simple and limited in size. Hand draw the design for tracing or use one of several software programs available for designing embroidery patterns.
Step2
Mark the design on the material. Depending on the thickness of the towel you may need to use chalk, tape, markers, or a contrasting thread color.
Step3
Secure the area in a traditional two-ring embroidery hoop. The ring keeps an even tension on the material while sewing.
Step4
Use a stabilizer (backing) under the monogram and stitch directly into it if using a machine. The backing keeps the fabric from moving while sewing, as well as secure the embroidery thread to the towel. The backing can be removed once stitching is completed.
Step5
Stitch by hand or machine the monogram approximately two inches above the hem. On bath towels, place the monogram four inches above the hem. Or, stitch the monogram anywhere you desire.
Step6
Sew the design twice, one directly on top of the other. This will provide a more visible monogram, especially on thicker towels.
Step7
Remove backing from the towel. Trim away any excess threads.
Step8
If machine stitching, sew an underlay over the area to be monogrammed before stitching the design itself. Some crafters use a zigzag stitch for this use. The underlay secures the towel from bunching.
